ANEMONE // EMPOWERED

Wearable Technology

Anemone // Empowered (2020)

"White anemone flowers symbolize sincerity due to their delicate appearance. Red and pink anemone flowers symbolize death or forsaken love. Purple anemone flowers symbolize protection from evil." -FTD

I took a product design course called Wearable Technology just because I could, even though I couldn't even sew a button on right. That's right- any interactive devices I slapped together were surviving on courtesy of the million duct tapes I robbed from my dad. *shameless*

The final product was supposed to be quick as long as we had a sewing machine, and we were to present our final wearables in a Fashion Show which usually caught the attention of the local news outlets.

However, COVID-19 hit, which meant that we were barred access from the studio (which meant no sewing machine access) and the fashion show was cancelled (which meant that grading had to be done based on photos and videos). I miraculously survived this module.

"ANEMONE", alt. title Empowered, was a  LED-lights and servo motor based wearable technology piece exemplifying the empowerment of abused women, highlighting that they are still pure, and are fighters for living on despite their scars. My inspiration came from my research muse at that point of time- Sharia Law. I spent hours on the net back then trying to figure out the logic behind the law and why women had to suffer acid burns and stoning for the slightest of actions.

The outfit inspiration was also taken from the Vocaloid MV <Dark Circus>, where children were mutilated to become freaks of a circus show. Among them, a girl's scars and wounds were covered by flowers.

The white body suit symbolised the raw purity these scarred women still retained despite their emotional and physical scars, and how these women stayed true to their bodies and hearts. A breathing red LED light running through the entire body on a regular rhythm represented that these women were warriors- alive, breathing, and still ready to fight back. Servo Motors were also used to raise wings behind the outfit, as these women are ready to own the skies again. Look below for my initial sketch and a video detailing my work!

Credits to my dear sister for being my model because of the pandemic. I think she had a lot of fun scaring my mom with her white face paint and blood red lips afterwards.
